Hidden in Plain Sight — Tzar is Home After 4 Days

Tzar stepped on the window button and jumped from the car with his leash still attached. After a couple sightings, the trail went cold. Dogs are incredible at hiding — even in the middle of the city, surrounded by big box stores and heavily traveled parking lots and roadways.
He escaped on Monday. Wednesday evening, through binoculars, I spotted what I thought was a manhole cover at the base of a small tree in a retention pond. Then the “manhole cover” lifted its head. The profile of those ears was unmistakable.
Hidden between Walmart, Kohl’s, Aldi, and Lowe’s… with thousands of people passing by every day… and he remained unseen. Sneaky boy.
In full flight mode, he wouldn’t allow anyone within 50 yards. He bolted from the area, so we set a feeding station and cameras nearby, hoping to anchor him back to a predictable location.
No activity overnight or the following day. We began contacting additional landowners for permission to operate if needed — every one of them said yes immediately. Now the question was whether he had moved… or if that leash had become tangled somewhere.
Weather was turning rough, with heavy rain forecast overnight. Thursday evening we received a report of a German Shepherd about a mile away — well within range for a fearful dog. Hopeful, we responded quickly, only to find a different dog safely contained in a fenced yard. Not Tzar.
Then at 5:45 AM — in the rain — Tzar returned to the feeding station. Even waterlogged food didn’t slow down a hungry boy.
The plan was set. The trap was placed Friday evening at 5:41 PM. I expected he would wait until well after dark, especially with severe storms approaching overnight. The wind had shifted, and I hoped he was still close to where I first spotted him. I laid a scent trail of liquid smoke along the east side of the area, allowing the wind to carry it across the entire space.
It worked.
Just 40 minutes later, he followed the scent trail like a dinner bell. Rotisserie chicken sealed the deal. He entered the trap quickly and calmly.
Success.
Tzar is a perfect example of how effectively a dog can hide in an urban environment — often only moving at night, unseen even in the busiest places.
Welcome home, sweet boy. Your Pawrents are very happy to have you back. 🐾
